Hallelujah!, I thought, lost in gustatory rapture, I love my job. As course after delectable course was delivered with relish, I succumbed wholly to the spell of the Sooke Harbour House.....

.... With its reputation sprinting before it, the place had a lot to live up to. Tales of the artwork, a 14,450-bottle wine cellar, infamous edible gardens and sensational food had set the picture… and I wasn’t disappointed. I doubt anyone ever is. Beauty and talent abound here and Sinclair and Frédérique’s passion for what they do pervades everything, their inspiration still the life-blood after 23 years at the helm. Inside, a gallery of local talent adorns every surface (including the elevator), while outside the two acres of gardens tumble down to the ocean in a festival of scents and colours, their contents all being groomed for the dinner plate. Everything eaten here is organic, seasonal and local; the latter to the extent that olive oil is eschewed and replaced by locally pressed nut and seed oils. Culinary wonders aside, the rooms are artistic and luxurious. My Passionflower room - its namesake trailing over the window - had a bath you could do lengths in while admiring the ocean, and a bed de luxe. As I sat on my lush private verandah at breakfast, contemplating the Olympic Mountains emerging through mist in the distance, I decided that the rumours were definitely true. A very special place indeed.
