In describing this float home on the delta of the Fraser River it’s going to be hard not to mention the ducks. Anything ‘duck’ goes, from coat-stands and notepaper, to bed linen and wallpaper.....

.... Returning guests add to their numbers. One couple spent their anniversary (!?) in Willow Cottage counting, and came up with over 800. However, by the time you read this, some may well have migrated south to the new Water Garden cottage downstairs, where they share a space with herons, swans, eagles and an occasional parrot. Why? Closer to the river, a private hot tub? Who knows what motivates a duck? Probably Jill. She runs this place with obvious enjoyment and (can I say?) flamboyant attention to detail, off-the-wall and otherwise. The floating Florida room, for example, with its hot tub, fairy lights in the shape of flamingos, and climbing plants growing madly in all directions is a favourite place for absorbing local information from that weighty tome ‘Duck Inn Details’. This covers everything, including ghosts. Sherry, sketchbooks, robes and slippers, boats and bicycles are all supplied. Lox-style smoked salmon, from Allen’s smokehouse, along with cream cheese, capers and bagels are packed in the fridge. Fabulous restaurants, a bird reserve and long riverside walks are local Ladner attractions. But more convenient and harder to beat is the pleasure of dangling ones toes in the water from a private dock, supping a local tipple, and watching the wildlife drift by.
