The Kenney Dam has created the Nechako lake system, the spindly fingers of which stretch through the Tweedsmuir Provincial Park and to the distant Coast Mountains. The lodge sits on the easterly Knewstubb Lake in a secluded bay near the dam.....

.... Foolhardy types have been know to take a five-week trip, and canoe or kayak the watery loop, but it seems to me preferable, and exciting, to charter Josef’s float plane, strap a canoe to the side (I’m not joking), get dumped in the wilderness (not too far), and make your way back home. The two boys are qualified guides and canoe instructors (if you need them), and are immensely capable. They built the little cabin that sits on the lakeside, with logs hauled from the lake and cut by hand - aged just ten and twelve. They are also keen fishermen. Rods can be hired, and you can tie your own flies, or at least try; all the kit is there. The accommodation is basic, but with all the important essentials, comfortable beds, lots of hot water and large log fires. Elk and monstrous moose horns adorn the walls in the sitting room, seriously squidgy leather chairs and piles of National Geographic provide a pleasurable hour before dinner. Four courses of great Swiss food (also breakfast and packed lunches) are all cooked by Elisabeth and ensure that you stay full of beans (energy that is).
