We British, with our piffling lakes and half-hearted storms, struggle with the concept of an inland lighthouse. Yet what would be a joke in the Lake District is a necessity on Lake Huron.....

.... The lighthouse is fascinating, a curiously squat affair on the tip of McKay Island, near the town of Bruce Mines, which was originally settled in the 1800s by Cornish miners. The lighthouse was rescued from destruction in the 1960s after the actual light had been moved to a nearby metal tower. The Peterson family built the causeways that connect McKay Island to the mainland via French Island. Since both islands are owned by the Petersons, guests can wander where they like. The interior of the lighthouse is not glamorous, but all essentials are provided, and the bedrooms, one of which used to be the battery room, are cosy. The view from the living area most certainly is glamorous, however, and people will often come in October to watch the lightning shows that vivify the autumn sky. Or in November to experience storms that have sunk many a Great Lakes ship. If you enjoy the wind in your hair, take a ride on one of the bikes they have for guests, or climb up a small ladder to the widow’s walk, sing a shanty and look across the vast Georgian Bay. On the shore-side of the lighthouse is a separate building, which is used for receptions throughout the year. The Petersons also have cottage accommodation on French Island.
