A whippety figure in a dashing fedora bounded up the stairs to greet me… so this was ‘Crazy’ Ron! Tales of this Tofino legend had pre-empted my visit and the rumours are true, he is crazy – in the best possible way – and seems to operate at about three times the speed of the rest of us. I’ll have what he’s having.....

.... The inn, on Tofino’s waterfront, mirrors this energy and humour. Never a dull moment here. The colours hit you as soon as you enter the hallway, antique advertising signs advertising more quirkiness within. The rooms are similarly vibrant. Every one is painted a bright hue and psychedelic stained glass transforms bathrooms into prisms of colour. Aeroplanes hang off the ceiling in one room, a totem pole sits solemnly in the next and beautiful hand-carved whale doors lead on to the balcony in another. Even the brickwork and railings have a story - the bricks were recycled from Gastown in Vancouver and the balcony railings started life in 1880s Austria. Ron is particularly proud of his ‘cool beyond cool’ antique Japanese tin toys in the Sushi restaurant, and the comical giant Buddha salvaged from a 1950s San Francisco Chinese restaurant. A feast for the eyes and a fistful of merriment. Tough City was the colourful original nickname of Tofino, by the way.
