You’d be hard pushed to find a more welcoming, ebullient hostess than Clair. The place feels less like a B&B and more like an extended summer lunch party where no-one’s quite got round to going home.....

.... Contented guests lounge on the wooden deck or in the hammock, admire the rambling garden and come and go from the beach. But your hostess certainly isn’t the only attraction. Built in 1857 as a farmhouse, the place has a casual-yet-chic feel, with chunky wooden furniture, gleaming wooden floors and local art. The garden-facing dining room is the centre of activity and you’ll savour such delights as blueberry griddle cakes, fruit cobbler (personally tried and tested) and herb scones for breakfast. The three bedrooms are unfussy and luxurious. Beds are piled with cushions and you could be putting your belongings on an old washtub bench or in a Victorian bonnet dresser. Anyone with a penchant for poultry should opt for the chicken-tastic Rooster Room. And if you’re really lucky you might get to see Clair serenading her disabled terrapin Hook, one of the inhabitants of the garden pond. Bayfield is a delightful town located on Lake Huron and well worth several days.
