If you know your birds, or fancy joining the happy group that does, you really must spend some time in the teeming natural aviary of Wild Rose. The garden lies on a principal migratory route and Tom and Lily have spotted over 200 species, including 77 in one day! Tom would doubtless beat all-comers in naming them because he was the Discovery Channel’s chief bird guru and has the enviable task of travelling the globe in search of the elusive greater-spotted magnolia-warbler.....

.... Lily accompanies him and combines these trips with minor haulage operations. Consequently, Wild Rose is strewn with exotica and you can sleep in rooms themed to the rainforest, the African savannah or – and I was persuaded to think this by the hand-painted Mexican sink – the south-west desert. Mexico was also the origin of the huge, rough-hewn, yellow pine dining table and chairs; birding certainly isn’t the only attraction here. In May the couple arrange four-day packages where you’ll discover the joys of both birding and Lily’s culinary expertise. Expect to leave several pounds heavier! But even if you can’t tell your hoopoes from your nightjars, you’ll love Wild Rose and the deck is a perfect place to sip Chardonnay and chat with your hosts. Minutes from Point Pelee National Park. Tom will also do personal birding tours.
