A "quest for adventure" first lured Kathy to Canada and 43 years later this spirit still pervades Aubergine. Built in 1869 as a Latter Day Saints Church, an unassuming exterior gives no hint of the phantasmagoria within.....

.... Entering the vast main room is like stumbling onto the set of some bohemian play, the riot of props the vision of some idiosyncratic set-designer. Afghan rugs, an alarmingly muscle-bound 1960s Superwoman and a part of the Forest of Arden (salvaged from a production of As You Like It) are just a few of the whimsies. Everywhere you look something unusual catches the eye: painted wooden floors, exposed antique metal air ducts, a bedroom cupboard that doubles as a balcony - somehow it all works and comfort is never compromised. The two bedrooms reminded me of a seaside cottage with their pristine linens, wicker chairs, tongue-and-groove ceilings and over-laden bookshelves. I particularly liked the ‘floating’ room with its bizarre pod-like shower and windows onto the interior. Aubergine is an aesthetic feast and it is no surprise that Kathy’s regulars fight over dates. She prefers to rent the open-plan house out as a whole to people travelling together. If you only want one room, she will do a bit of matchmaking and find suitable housemates or else ensure that you are the only guests. Stratford’s theatre festival from April-October is very popular.
