Guests are very much free-range at this 1898 colonial-style mansion. Ella insists they be ‘on their own time and do their own thing’.....

.... If you sleep in and miss breakfast – no problem, just help yourself. The kitchen is a free-for-all, including, rather dangerously I thought, the cookie jar. You can while away the long summer days in the five-acre garden with its pool, tennis court, croquet, volleyball, badminton and horseshoe pit. Or the more leisurely can read one of the library’s numerous books in the shade of the towering pines. In winter, when the prospect of a two-setter palls, the playground moves indoors. TV is an absentee here and the wood-panelled library with its fire becomes a social hub where backgammon, chess or crokinole could all be on the evening’s agenda. If you’ve never come across the latter before, you’ll soon be a fierce competitor. The 12 rooms boast brass or wooden beds, shuttered windows and locally-made quilts and are all named after local pioneers. The undulating farmland around St Jacobs has long been the heart of Old Order Mennonite country, so don’t be surprised to find yourself dodging the traditional horses and buggies on the way there. Nature trails and farmers’ markets nearby. Cross-country skiing and skating.
