This island institution instils the kind of loyalty in its guests normally reserved for the National Hockey League. My neighbour at dinner, Margarite, had been coming since 1943 and enthused about the ‘extended family’; another couple, who were married here 60 years ago, had been back every year since to celebrate their anniversary.....

.... It even has its own fan club, The Friends of Yellow Point Society!, devoted as much to the Hill family as to the lodge. Richard’s remarkable father Gerry bought the 165 acres in the early 30s, having had his eye on the property since childhood. Long before it became fashionable Gerry wanted a place committed to the preservation of the environment, where people could immerse themselves in nature. Seventy years on, his son Richard remains true to this vision. You won’t find a TV here, but at this ‘summer camp for grown-ups’ you’ll find an abundance of other entertainments - the problem is choosing which one. I opted for lounging in the magnificent ‘hanging-out room’ with its endless sofas, huge fireplace and vast beams. And then there’s the food. Three enormous, tasty meals are enjoyed communally, and the table is never empty of some tempting treat. This is a casual, fun place, perfect for any season. Go off-season, mid-week and you’ll be flabbergasted at the good value. Hiking, tennis, kayaking, bicycling, massages, boat trips all on offer.
