I encountered a few of my favourite Canadian things at Lilac Lane. Firstly, Mariann herself, gorgeous, generous and filled with smiles; and secondly her son Matthew’s donuts - Jamie Oliver, stand aside.....

.... They live just outside bustling Peterborough in an 1860s house, built of stone excavated during the building of the local railway. The original porch of the house has been converted to the breakfast room. With thick stone walls, wood floors and windows all around, some of which look inside to the kitchen - others across the paddock and valley beyond - it’s a lovely sunny place to start the day. Shafts of morning sun stream into the room, somehow already familiar, with its pine chests, dried flowers, plants and a charming old baker’s cabinet. is one of those gorgeous Canadian weatherboard barns, home to three barn cats, a couple of pony traps, bits of old aeroplane, painful-looking turnip-peelers, a threshing machine, chairs, tables, beams, windows and other ordinary and extraordinary bits of architectural salvage. Projects galore. Slowly, but surely, they will be lovingly restored and promoted to the house, like the beautifully chunky church doors in the sitting room. A personable and charming home.
