With its prime spot on the waterfront on one of Old Montreal’s famed cobbled streets, the Auberge is ideal if you want to be right there in the hub of the old city, but indulge yourself at the same time. The scene can’t have changed a bit in over a hundred years (the building dates from the 1880s).....

.... It doesn’t take much to imagine the clatter of hooves and rumble of carriages in times gone by. Inside, the Antonopoulos family have created an atmosphere fitting for such surroundings. Natural materials feature heavily and the rooms are an innovative medley of rough stone walls, wooden floors, original beams and luxurious super-beds. Tall windows look out across the twinkling harbour and the various remaining exhibits from Expo ’67 – namely the biosphere. My room had the added rustic feature of a barn-style wooden post, a fitting companion to the exposed walls. Downstairs, a spiral staircase descends into their award-winning restaurant, Les Remparts. It’s one of those cosy, convivial restaurants filled with chatter and the chink of wine-glasses. My supper was seriously tasty and I heard other guests exclaiming delightedly as they ate. Furthermore, you have to love the kind of place that deals with your car, delivers the papers to your room every morning and serves you evening cocktails. There is a rooftop terrace too.
