I felt more than a little nervous as I arrived here; French was never my forte and English certainly isn’t Marianne’s. But you don’t need language to understand the charms of La Sauvagine and its delightful owner.....

.... It’s one of those cosy, characterful places you immediately feel comfortable in, with lots of old wooden furniture and a real lived-in look. It’s also positively prehistoric in Canadian terms, having been built in 1743 and occupied by eight generations of the same family until Marianne, an author and poet, bought it in 1991. Originally from Switzerland, it was always her dream to live in Quebec, and after recovering from illness 14 years ago she waved goodbye to the Alps and headed for Montreal. She couldn’t have chosen a more authentically Quebecois house than this. Vast stone walls and roughly-hewn beams betray its age, and the rooms are the epitome of old Quebec with quilts, antique Quebecois beds and sloped beamed ceilings. The ‘Zen’ room adds an interesting Oriental twist. I loved the fact that nothing is quite straight and the wooden floors are delightfully crooked from generations of wear. Located only 30 minutes from downtown Montreal, this is an easy escape from city life and Marianne is a sunny, easy-going lady who you can’t fail to like. On the Mille-Isles River. Bicycles for hire. Very little English spoken here.
