Of all the former mayors of Quebec towns that I’ve ever met (two), Jean is the most down-to-earth. A happy jeans-and-shirt kind of guy, he spent four years directing civic affairs in Ste-Luce, and now works as a hospital administrator in Rimouski.....

.... He is Ste-Luce to the bone, born in the riverside house where he and Nicole operate a charming B&B. Nicole, a retired teacher, comes from the nearby town of Biencourt, whose literal meaning of "well short" explains (she says) her size. Theirs is a very relaxed house; all is in superb condition, the welcome is homely, and I felt truly at ease - or was that the maple-derived apéritif? The downstairs section of the B&B is open-plan and you eat and sit in a recently completed extension that has windows on three sides. The bedrooms are simply decorated with the odd family heirloom, and I was rather taken with the velvet bedspread that cosseted my bed. Outside, there is a hot tub on the sundeck and a narrow garden leads down to a gazebo at the edge of the beach where summer evenings are often made even more memorable by camp-fires on the sand. National Geographic magazine says (apparently!) that the sunsets in this region are the best in the world. Ste-Luce is famous for its long beach and pretty promenade, while keen divers can visit the nearby wreck of the Empress of Ireland.
