While some visitors will revel in the great breakfasts and dashes of humour that characterise the auberge, others with more scientific leanings will enjoy the ornithology, palaeontology and ecology - just a few of the ‘ologies’ to be sampled here. Encircled by the USA, Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula and the Acadian Coast, this northern shoulder of New Brunswick offers a cornucopia of attractions.....

.... The sea is a short stroll from the breakfast table and a profusion of wildlife is literally on your doorstep. Lush fields slope away from the Blue Heron down to the Baie des Chaleurs, home to both Heron Island, an ecological reserve (visitable on boat trips), and a mysterious Phantom Ship, a burning schooner that locals say they have seen sailing the bay before vanishing moments later. The bay is also the second oldest fossil site in the world, and the ancient Appalachian Mountains rise up behind. What’s so great about the Blue Heron, however, is the accessibility of all this, and James’s local knowledge makes it all the more so. Back inside, rooms are fresh and incredibly light-filled with gleaming hardwood floors and ‘a little bit of whimsy’. 1920s prints, clawfoot baths, four-posters and old maps are a few of the things you could find. The pièce de résistance must be the views, although you may disagree after one of Lynne’s breakfasts. Biking, sea-kayaking, hiking, fishing, horse-riding also available.
