With phantom ships, mysterious sea serpents and things that creak in the night, this is not a destination for the faint-hearted. But for gung-ho Greenwood types it is just the ticket and a stay here is certainly a unique experience.....

.... Situated at the extreme south-western tip of the island, the 68-foot lighthouse was built in 1875 and manned until 1963 when its second keeper retired. Jack, a twinkly-eyed Newfoundlander with an Irish lilt, told me with relish how the first keeper, ‘Lighthouse Willie’, still haunts the place. The lighthouse itself only has two guest rooms, ‘The Tower’ and ‘Keeper’s Quarters’, and doubles as a museum. Photos, facts and memorabilia crowd the walls as you wind up the old wooden staircase to the Lamp Room. From here the views across the Northumberland Strait are fantastic, and the sunsets sublime. You may even get to see the flaming Phantom Ship, first sighted in 1786 (spring and fall are prime sighting times). The lighthouse is right next to Cedar Dunes Provincial Park and summer days can be spent basking on the very fine beach; the ocean is so close that you have the rare luxury of being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. And for weary beach-dwellers the lighthouse restaurant offers a tasty range of liquid and solid sustenance. Great walking and beaches.
