An eerie mist curled round the trees as I drove down the track to French Beach. Ahead of me the sun was dipping down behind the distant mountains, crowning them with a fiery halo and throwing a kaleidoscope of colours across the darkening sky.....

.... Remote, wild and infinitely romantic, French Beach is just a little further up the coast road than Sooke, and well worth the few extra kilometres. The situation is superb and a few evenings of sunsets like that will do wonders for any high blood pressure. The main house is right on the cliffs, trees sheltering you on one side while on the other the cliffs plunge away to the ocean below. Everything has been designed with nature in mind. Giant windows frame the ever-changing natural cinema, binoculars await passing wildlife and the wide wraparound deck juts so temptingly over the ocean you could almost dive off into the blue (you’d have to be very brave indeed though!). I could spend hours on that deck just wallowing in the beauty of it all. Inside, a towering totem-pole watches over things and the open brick fireplace keeps chilly winter evenings at bay. For the more adventurous, the treehouse offers a slightly alternative experience. And don’t forget to whistle while you walk - bears, wolves and cougars also live here! On San Juan Hiking Trail. Beside beautiful French Beach.
