This is the Real McCoy… a truly special, tell-the-grandchildren, buy-the-film-rights kind of place providing the only inhabitation on Quirpon Island. The island juts out into the Atlantic off the northernmost tip of Newfoundland and has the longest iceberg-viewing season in the province.....

.... Time passes rapidly as you watch bergs and whales and enjoy the walks, views and splendid isolation. I actually saw very little the first day because of a real autumnal ‘pea-souper’, so waking up to the sun and the sea the next morning was all the more thrilling. You stay in one of two cottages, with the lighthouse (now functioning automatically) nearby. Inside, all is homely and warm; there is little luxury, but that’s not why you’re here. Your needs are met by a cheery local couple, Doris and Hubert Roberts. Doris cooks hearty meals to fuel your wanderings; Hubert is in charge of getting you to the island. They meet you at the dock in the tiny mainland village of Quirpon, and take you in a small fishing boat to the island’s landing bay, from where there’s a short moorland walk to the lighthouse. If the sea is rougher, you’ll go to another bay and walk further (about one and a half hours). That’s what happened to me, and yes, that’s enormous fun too. Magical in every way. Minimum two nights stay recommended. There is now a full-time kayak guide for kayaking up close to the whales and icebergs.
