A genuine wilderness retreat, BlueWater is somewhere to turn off the cell phone, loosen the collar and get out the nature guide. The imposing, white-cedar lodge rises up from the trees at the eastern extreme of Newfoundland’s boreal forests and is surrounded by spruce, fir, cherry, maple, aspen and birch.....

.... You’ll be identifying them all by the time you leave. The large deck looks out towards Indian Arm Pond (although if that’s a pond, then I’m a midget) and there is no other property for miles. This is not a place for agoraphobes! The Sargents designed the building and laid the gravel road without ever compromising the natural splendour. Winifred is the interior force, designing rooms and creating meals, while Gary, who worked for Parks Canada in Alberta, builds, grows and generally asserts order in nature’s midst. He’s one of those vastly knowledgeable, easy-going guys who will have you hooked on the wild before you realise it. Soaring wood ceilings and massive log walls - no need for further insulation – characterise the main room, while the chalet-style bedrooms have home-made beds, wooden floors and panelling in many different types of wood. This is a new operation and the Sargents’ enthusiasm is contagious. You have been warned! Activities include hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing and extreme relaxing.
