This beautiful inn sits on a coastal hillside overlooking Trinity Bay and the inlets and saltbox houses spread out below. In the middle of summer, you can watch icebergs and whales bobbing past; in September, when I was there, you’ll probably have to content yourself (it’s pretty easy) with admiring the play of sea, mist, sun and rock.....

.... It really is spectacular. John and Peggy had a summer home here for many years before moving permanently in 1990, and after a glorious night and still more glorious morn, I was tempted to follow suit. The main buildings are new, but the style is old Newfoundland. Pale bedrooms have large windows and painted wooden floors, and all feels authentic. Downstairs, windows surround the dining room, eliciting a chorus of happy sighs from those admiring the breakfast-time view. Only food of the highest order could compete and the inn responds to the challenge, as local staff produce wonderful dishes, many cooked with exotic twists. At supper, I had salmon nori (a Japanese style) and smacked my lips for weeks after. The Fishers are a delightful couple with the right ideas about how to treat their guests - they would never force you into any contrived gaiety for example. Fiercely proud of Newfoundland, they love to show off its diversity to visitors (including Judi Dench and Kevin Spacey who stayed here during the filming of The Shipping News). In the area: theatre festival, movie set, coastal hikes, kayaking.
