Sheila NaGeira, a 17th-century Irish princess, would be delighted to know that she’d given a name to this splendid B&B. She was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Carbonear, but the area has plenty of attractions to reward a voluntary visit.....

.... Foremost among these is NaGeira itself, with its panelled interiors, comfy sofas and large, simply-coloured bedrooms. Wood abounds, be it the Canadian maple in the hallway and dining room, oak and mahogany panelling elsewhere, the recently restored staircase, or outside in the form of the towering chestnuts and birches beside the house. There is nothing heavy about the look though: lots of light and clever use of pale paint tones prevent that. Upstairs, the four bedrooms lead off the corners of the landing, and all have down-filled duvets, earth-tone walls and dark wood doors. The large Room 1, with its spectacular mustard bedspread, textured walls and jacuzzi, is the most popular, while the less ebullient colours and four-poster in Room 3 will be more to some tastes. Diana and Marvin grew up in Newfoundland, but left the island years ago. They were running a sheep farm in Ontario when the siren call of their homeland grew too strong and in 2002 they bought NaGeira (already a successful B&B) and set about adding another strand to the island’s tradition of hospitality.
